We look at the installed system, not just the unit that is complaining.

A cooling problem is rarely only a cooling problem. A clogged filter starves the evaporator coil, the coil ices over, the drain pan overflows, and the homeowner calls about water on the floor. The fault started three components away from where it presented.

So the visit starts at the filter and the return path, moves to the coil surfaces and the blower, then to the refrigerant and the electrical side. Only after that do we talk about parts.

That sequence also tells you when a repair is worth doing and when it is not. An old outdoor unit with a failed compressor on an otherwise sound air handler is a straightforward replacement. A charge leak behind a wall coil in an attic is not.
